Magnezone (2009)

The Gen 4 period of the tcg saw the most card prints for Magnezone. It isn't really unusual for the fresh and new native pokemon to get mutliple cards from their home era, but they really went overboard with Magnezone even if we take that into consideration. I've always liked Magnezone very much, but when I think about how Salamence got treated in both Gen 3 and 4 I do get a bit dumbfounded. Not only does Magnzeone have 7 total prints across the DP and HGSS era but all of them are very good without exception. While you can realistically make a deck focused around any one of them, we obviously can't include all of them together in one deck so the true best of the best will have to rise up on top. Perhaps fittingly, both of them come from the powerhouse set, Stormfront. Below is one of the ways I've build Magnezone for the 2009 DP format.

Notes and strategy: No matter which Magnezone card you want to take advantage of in the era, you won't be able to make the most of their large energy attacks without effective energy acceleration. This alone makes the Super Connectivity Magnezone the most important in a sense; as all the other Magnzeone attackers and even non Magnzeone attackers need. We run 2 of this card in this deck and in other builds you'd even want to run 3. What also makes this card such an MVP is that it's able to grab even special metal energies from the discard pile, which basically means you get to use more than 4 special metal energies in a game. Excellent.

My favourite Magnzeone card from the Stormfront duo though is the Magnetic Search one. The attacks and retreat are better and as a metal pokemon it's one of the ones that can take advantage of special metal energies in the first place. But, it definitely wouldn't be here if it wasn't for it's poke-power which allows us to grab a metal or lightning from the deck every turn. This greatly aids us in evolving into more Magnezones quickly and in other deck variants it allows you to get other metal and lightning attackers. Most players would probably run 1 and then run the Lv. X but the way I'm running this deck here I'd rather have the second one.

If you're new to the format you may be confused to see a random Regigigas and Fire Arceus in this deck but they have a role as solid counter attackers. Regigigas will be able to hit colorless weak pokemon for weakness, mainly Garchomp C Lv. X so hopefully it's gone for good in your match. Dialga G Lv. X doesn't exactly have any game winning edge over us but because it's very annoying for me and tough once it sets up I have a counter for it with Fire Arceus. The great merit of Magnezone's energy acceleration is we can power up these types of attackers among others and can take advantage of more weaknesses. These are both basic pokemon with flexible energy costs making them easy fits in this deck. Fire Arceus requires you to sacrifice an energy spot for a fire energy, but in truth, even our Magnezones are very flexible with their energy costs only needing 1 lightning energy on them to attack. Of course, the Multi Energy here can serve as both a fire or lightning energy so it's nice to have at least 1.

Setting up through Spiritomb is ideal like with most non SP decks from the DP era since you can slow down SP and other turbo decks while you're getting ready. Once you get a Magnetic Search Magnezone out it will be easy to get the rest of them with it's poke-power and Broken Time-Space. Felicity is as usual is a solid supporter card to draw while getting rid of extra copies of Spiritombs and other unneeded cards. Of course, what we also want to do with her is discard a few lightning energies for Magnezone to start grabbing. If you wish to keep a trainer lock going, you can also just attack with the lightning Magnezone here and promote a Spiritomb when you switch.

That's the end of this deck profile. There are so many different ways to build Magnezone in the DP era but I think this is one of the more consistent ways to do so. You can honestly even drop a Pokemon Rescue for another supporter card, Uxie or another energy. You can even tech this deck with other non Magnezone attackers but I want to give special mention to Great Encounters Latios. You will have to tweak the deck quite a bit, but Latios can hit for 120 damage for 4 energies. One of those needs to be grass, but the rest of them can all be lightning making it another useful potential partner for Magnezone here.

Well, hope you guys enjoyed reading about Magnezone here. Catch you guys next time. Wazzuuup!!
