Cards Of The Week #21

Gear Two (OP11-080)

The iconic Gear Two technique from Luffy has its own card by now and is a good dual use card on some purple decks. The wording of the main effect means you will need a dual blue purple leader in order to use it and there aren't too many of those around. The main one they made this card to work with is OP11 Luffy leader helping him get into the high number DON!! quicker.

Good cards that did this before like Mr.2 needed 4 DON!! which gave this card little bit of edge in speed. Otherwise Mr. 2 would be much better as you get a handy character down that would cause for your opponent. Nowdays though this card also has competition with Yamato from OP17 as she's also a cost 3 card and a blocker. Despite that, I've seen all 3 of these cards see play in some combination in OP11 Luffy so it doesn't matter much.

When you don't need to gain DON!! anymore this card can be used as a +3000 counter event from the hand so at least it won't be a stuck card in hand. Ultimately, I personally like it the least bewteen Yamato or Mr. 2 but the dual counter use prevents me from dragging it down too much with its score.

Charlestone (OP05-038)

Charlestone is an incredibly broken counter event with OP13 Luffy as it will literally give you a +6000 defence block you can use all at once or in pieces alongisde the solid +4000 counter you get with this card's main effect. You can argue outside of that pairing its second effect will be pretty pointless in other decks but what's most important here for me is any additional future potential.

It may be unlikely; as by the time we could get another card to exploit it, it may alreay be rotated out. Either way, the interraction with OP13 Luffy and some other green cards is strong enough for me to rate it highly. It even has a handy trigger effect that could stop your opponent's leader from attacking or rest a cheap blocker going into your own turn.
