Cards Of The Week #18

Shanks (OP14-027)

It would seem that Shanks cards are like the Rayquaza cards of pokemon because every time this guy gets a print, there's a 90% it's going to be good, to great to broken. We don't have much to complain on for this print either. It has a very nice 9000 power for a 7 cost character and 2 useful effects that you can constantly benefit from.

When Shanks is rested you can rest up an opponent's character with 7000 base power or less. This will pretty much cover 5 cost characters and anything below but not limited to those when you look at 7 cost Foxy for example. This effect is exceptionally powerful to stop most blockers over and over.

The second effect is a mini OP09 Shanks copy-cat and I say mini because it's slightly weaker, only working during your opponent's turn and this card needs to be rested as well. The effect is still excellent when you factor this card is 3 costs less than that other Shanks, and the condition is hardly a condition since this card will always be rested after it attacks.

Released in the same set as the busted Mihawk leader, you can instantly gain this card's effects by resting it through an effect like his, so you don't even get the drawback of having to wait to rest by attacking. Nevertheless, even if you do have to wait a turn this is still a very strong generic card you can run in many green decks besides Mihawk.

Foxy (OP07-071)

This Foxy card is another prime example of how new cards generally get stronger than older cards. Foxy compliments Shanks in this week's review because one of his effects is nearly the same as Shanks but then the rest of the package is much weaker. The worst culprit is that 7000 attack power while also costing 7 as Shanks. That's real weak, and really drags this card's rating down the most. It doesn't even have a +1000 counter in hand at least with that mediocre attack power.

The main nice effect is weakening all of your opponent's characters by 1000 power. You don't have to be rested like Shanks, but your leader does need to be from the Foxy Pirates theme limiting this card into Foxy decks only. The other effect will let you get a rested DON!! back from your DON!! deck which is nice but not enough to make up for that really average attack power.

Printed in OP07, the pattern should be very obvious to see here. The Shanks above is nearly 2 full years newer but you can still be pretty taken aback by how blatant their difference in card package is.
