Cards Of The Week #15

Marshall. D. Teach (ST27-005)

One thing to note about this Blackbeard card is that it can work in a non Blackbeard deck which is not the case with most of the cards from that theme. Well, at least before OP16 released. Seriously though, both of his effects are generic. You can rest this card to KO a 3 cost character or smaller and if this card is KOed you can grab any black card back from your trash to your hand. You could even grab an event with his effect.

On paper it might seem that this a broken beyond belief card but it barely even sees play in Blackbeard decks from what I gathered. There are a few reasons for this. For this first effect, it goes into the category multi-combo effects to get the most out of. That is to say you will need another effect to decrease character costs if you are to kill an important enough character with his effect. Doing this isn't as effective as when OP07 was the latest set. Not to mention you have so many cards that increase their own costs by themselves making the job even harder for such combos.

Outside of when you first summon this card; if you are to use this effect every turn it means you won't attack with his nice 8000 power. That's another drawback. The second effect is the better one out of the 2, but your opponent could just avoid killing the Blackbeard and then it just makes him a no effect beater. Even if they do kill him by a KO your effect doesn't really put that much pressure on them. Getting any black card back is sweet and useful, but since it goes back in your hand it can be a bit slow if you're not controlling the game well.

With everything said, I think this Blackbeard hasn't found the right home to shine best yet. That could change in the future but for now it's just a solid slow card.

Nico Robin (OP15-109)

Nico Robin Sky Island edition is another double summon character. Which means she's good. 7 for 7000 power isn't the best but at least she also has a +1000 counter in hand. When she's summoned you may also mess with your life by grabbing the top life card and then adding another life back from the top of your deck.

Depending on your yellow deck you can set up some trigger combos this way but in a OP11 Nami deck you automatically trigger her leader effect; turning this into a draw 1. Umm... that's pretty much it. She's good. The 5 cost for the extra character summon is generous enough. You do need a Straw Hat leader to get her full effect but we have plenty of yellow ones to choose from.
