Cards Of The Week #14

Crocodile (OP12-069)

Sigh... Why did you take so long to come out? This card's Baroque Works limitation means you can pretty much only get its effect with the 2 Crocodile leaders that are part purple. Both of them have rotated out now and both of them were never that great even when they were around in the format.

The OP04 Crocodile leader was the main leader out of the 2 that was going to make some good use of this card; as the DON!! minus condition triggers that leader's effect. But, even if you did run him there he only has 1 effect. You can get a +2000 buff during an opponent's attack and nothing else. Doesn't even last until the end of the turn.

Which brings me to how I started this article: This card would have been a great addition for OP04 Crocodile if it released around OP06 or something. His 8000 attack power is good for a 6 cost character and in an earlier format from around that period just this 1 effect was also good enough to help that leader. By the time this card released in OP12, all Crocodile leaders were still legal; but would be too weak even if you updated them with new cards and this Crocodile.

In our current format, there isn't even any leader you can use this card with making him just a beater with no counter in your hand. Even if I were to disregard the rotation he would only be a very average card in a Crocodile deck. It's too bad, the artwork is cool enough.

Boa Hancock (PRB02-017)

This yellow Boa Hancock is very similar to the "flagship" Boa from OP07 that will always be in the format since she has a manga print. 1000 less attack power but also 1 cost cheaper so that's fair enough. You have the same attack negate freeze effect on summon, that's not gonna work on any Luffy card. The difference is you can also select a leader with this Boa, but they will have to be a rested leader.

However, regardless of what you choose to freeze you need to discard abtrigger card from your hand to gain her effect. Keep in mind the blue Boa from OP07 does the exact same thing at no cost. Plus, you even get the chance to spin a cost 1 character at the bottom of the deck.

This Boa doesn't do that, but she does have a trigger effect that is pretty soild if it comes up at a good time. The ol' effect KO a mid range character trigger.

So to sum up, this Boa can give you some situational utilities the OP07 Boa doesn't give you but 90% of the time you'd just be gaining the same freeze effect while also losing a card from your hand. To get the most out of the freeze effect, you'd aim to target a character with very high attack power anyway. Targeting the leader will only be good if they had nothing else for you to target or in some other situational circumstances. To stop their attacking effect etc. I'd stick to OP07 Boa personally.
