Best Triggers For Yellow Luffy?
The new Luffy leader from starter deck 29 is a pure Yellow leader and part of the Egghead theme of cards. His one and only effect doesn't really give him much of a real benefit. You need to be low in life to be able to use it in the first place and it only allows you to draw and discard 1 card from your hand when this leader is attacking. The discard isn't optional, so essentially he only allows you to regulate and fix up your hand without actually drawing for extra cards. I do find that somewhat disapponting personally, but I'd still say he's a solid leader since he gets to start with 6 life cards and no negative drawback for that. With Yellow being the color specializing in having the most and best triggers, this is where this leader gets his chance to shine. In this article I'll be going through all the best trigger cards you should be running in this deck to get the most out of your trigger luck:
Thankfully, besides the 6 life he gets, Yellow Egghead Luffy does have good cards that only he can get the most out of, because he's Luffy. This Nico Robin comes from his very starter deck and is a trigger blocker while also being a +2000 counter in hand. You would have to be a fool to not to max out this card in your deck right now. Compared to some other similar counterparts, being cost 4 with 2000 power instead of cost 3 with 1000 power makes her slightly more resilient to some removal effects which is good, since we mainly want to get her on the field for free through her trigger effect.
The original Brulee from the first yellow starter deck is also a trigger blocker and while she's obviously not as good as Nico Robin in this deck she's still a trigger blocker which I find valuable. Also, in a situation where you would want to summon a cheap blocker from your hand her cost is cheaper for your Don! compared to Nico Robin. I like running 4 of her in my deck still.
Sanji gives you a card on summon with standard stats to work with so it's a great card to have. The trigger requires you to discard a card from your hand to play him but since you should be able to grab a card back with his searching effect you even out. So basically he's a free summon on trigger. As a searcher, he's a good card even if he doesn't end up in your life so maxing him out is an easy decision for me. Now, this means you are going to have to include enough Straw Hat cards but I believe you should be running your deck this way regardless.
This Jinbe also comes from the Egghead starter deck and also serves a great dual-purpose like Nico Robin. It's a +2000 counter in hand and the trigger let's you play it for free in our deck. 5000 attack power is by no means overpowered, but provided you get to play him free from your life it is still a character that can put pressure on most standard leaders. Even just a free body like this can be the difference of your opponent losing the game next turn if he randomly got down while your opponent was attacking your life in the late game of a match. Since he's a +2000 counter in hand anyway I max him out too.
While you sadly can't reap the trigger effects of all the Vegapunk scientists from OP07; there are still some very good cards from there that we can take advantage of. Usopp is another handy +2000 counter in hand and his trigger effect will buff our leader's defence and offence even more by 2000 power. This effect is incredibly helpful and it isn't even limited to our leader; you could buff another Egghead character instead. Very handy card that I also run a playset for. Even if you gain the trigger after your opponent's last attack you will still keep the 2000 power boost when you'll be attacking during your turn. You can't really go wrong with it if you ask me.
Bege from OP04 is one of the first OG broken yellow trigger cards that any yellow deck can include. Run it as a nice +2000 counter in hand and if it ends up in your life, then even better. His trigger effect will prevent an opponent's character and even leader from attacking no matter how strong. Another trigger card that could seal your opponent's loss if they step on it at the wrong time. Unfortunately, while I'd love to max it out, we also have to account for enough cards to fall into the Straw Hat and Egghead theme for our searchers to work. For this reason I only run 2 copies and substitude the other 2 for another similar card.
This Zoro from OP07 has a trigger that can grant us the exact strong effect from OP04 Bege but in a slightly different manner. Zoro will not prevent your opponent's leader or character from outright attacking, but will rest them instead. As long you stop an attack then the result is the same; and actually if you rest a character with this effect then you will still be able to attack them next turn. While your opponent could perhaps play a card that can unrest a character or leader, it will still be usually unlikely at our current game; so more often than not this card will function exactly as Bege in terms of trigger. The real big difference and downside to this card is that while in hand it's only a +1000 counter compared to Bege. This should still be alright most of the time; you can still discard this card to block an appropriate attack.
In my case I sacrifice the extra counter power to boost consistency. Zoro is an Egghead and Straw Hat card so he can be searched if revealed by Sanji and Lilith unlike Bege.
Even if she's already in play your opponent could avoid attacking her so that you don't get the free life. If you get her out before your opponent is at 3 or less life, you best believe your opponent will likely try to kill her as soon as possible so they don't have to worry about the great bonus she can give. All in all, she has multiple good qualities for an early to mid game character so I run 2 copies of her in my deck but wouldn't overdo it with more than 2. She isn't an Egghead or Straw Hat card that our searchers can grab and I outlined the rest of the drawbacks already.
The original Egghead Nico Robin from OP07 only has her trigger effect as her main appeal just like Zoro we looked above. Even so, this trigger effect is a really good one; allowing you to draw 2 cards if your opponent attacks her as a life card. I'd say this trigger effect is too good to pass up but seeing as it's all she has and is only a normal +1000 counter in hand I would understand if you'd rather experiment with some other triggers I decided to exclude. For me though, I'm still running a playset. If you'd rather have another +2000 counter then Franky from OP07 would probably be my next best pick.
This card can be extremely good in any yellow deck but can also miss the mark. That's because your opponent could possibly play around her main effect and her trigger effect has a condition that you could fail to meet if triggered at the wrong time. She also can't defend you if she's in your hand meaning you're almost forced to summon her if you want her to do anything. 4 cost for 6000 attack power is as good as it can get so it's understandable why she doesn't have a +1000 counter in hand. Her trigger effect will allow you to summon this solid attacker for free as long your opponent is at 3 life or less. Her main effect will also grant you a free life card from the top of your deck if she's KOed. Again, as long as your opponent is at 3 life or less. Now against OP13 Ace and a few other leaders all of her merits are active automatically but against other decks you're going to have to put in some work to meet those conditions.
The cards I went through in this article are not the only solid trigger cards that you could run in this deck but they are the most reliable and most momentum granting when their triggers go off at the right time. Certain triggers that can offer KO effects can be powerful but also very situational making me not very fond of them. So if you're wondering why I don't run such cards that's a really short explanation as to why. I'm currently playing matches with this deck on my one piece channel https://www.youtube.com/@WhimsiGPlayas and I'll eventually make a video with the full deck list as I usually do. Hope you all enjoyed reading this article and I'll see you all next time. Wazzuuup!!!!
This card is more of a mid game character that's just kind of decent but since you can reap her only effect as a trigger to she can serve as a lesser Bege or Zoro by stopping a mid range character from attacking. The limited range is not the only drawback though; you can't select a Luffy character with this effect even if the Luffy in question would be a complete weakling. Her stats are alright and you can always discard her from the hand to block an attack. Combined with the potential trigger bonus and being an Egghead card we can search, she's a decent enough card to run but only as a one of tech. I run 1 copy of her in my deck but she'd probably be one of the first cards I'd take out when something better comes around.
